Photographics

So when I set out to take my photos, I kept my focus on the entire scenery so I could pick from a wider range of patterns and textures to work from.

I experimented a little bit with creating texture by using a lower aperture and photographing reflections as well as focusing on perspective.

And my final few photos where to purely focus on shapes.

After putting the images in black and white, I could more easily pick out shapes and textures to edit together.

Using these photos, I did a few tests, resulting in these:

My top 3 from my work are:

I decided to go with this one for my presentation as I felt it had a good balance, interesting shape layering and the overall strongest visual outcome. I think if I were to redo this project I’d take more photos like the final set and think more strongly about centre points of the images.

Introduction to Animation: Session Workshop

Writing Prompt: 6 minutes for 5 lines to tell a story around a prompt

I chose Grief and put together a quick set of sentences and then a more detailed set.

Draft 1

A moment in time.

A loss to the soul.

Looking back painfully, longing for a different outcome.

Memories plague my mind of a time now passed.

Nothing left but to treasure those forgotten moments.

Draft 2

Faint patterings of rain began tapping away at the gazebo’s canvas.

Neon green lights bled into the mauve veil of night as spiders spun their webs across the rafters above.

Memories of strangers plagued her mind; her soul fell lighter and lighter with each passing person.

Steam billowed up towards the spiders as her tears were consumed by the fiery depths below her.

Nothing was left but to treasure the stars that lit her way back inside.

Motiongraphics

On the whole I’m happy with the outcome of my work but there are a lot of things I would change and improve if I had more time to adjust to the program and fully flesh out my ideas. My concept was the connection between dreams and waking emotions. I tried to utilise dream like shapes shifting and colours but again I don’t feel as it came out as polished as it could’ve been.

I found the program tricky to work within but it became easier the more I tried to problem solve the hurdles I was reaching. I wouldn’t say I’m confident in after effects yet as a lot of the interface takes some getting use to but I definitely feel more comfortable approaching it as a program now.

The most time consuming parts of the project were usually when I was searching for solutions rather than actually creating in the software. Putting together the shapes to build up my character was honestly the most engaging and enjoyable part of the entire process.

I would’ve really liked to add sound if I had more time to work on this. I really would’ve liked to have added comic book style SFX throughout but again, time restraints meant I couldn’t embellish it in this way.

3D Story Worlds

My intention with this 3D diorama was to create a post-cyberpunk/vaporwave city segment with greco-roman ruins and overgrowth, similar to visuals in the game Hyper Light Drifter.

Though I’ve used Blender before, Maya proved to be a new challenge in this project. I wasn’t particularly proficient at Blender but I was used to some shortcuts and layout features that Maya had more hidden away. Completing a short series of sketches and collecting references beforehand really helped with the flow of my work. I think I was relatively successful at communicating the story world I had been planning. The general tone of my model was the biggest jump as I think the end result looks more cheerful and light-hearted (reminiscent of models in Donut County and Monument Valley), than I had originally envisioned. I think this came about as a result of working in my comfort zone with my colour choices and the limitations of completing a low poly model in a new program. If I had more time and experience in the program, I would’ve liked to have incorporated more detailed shapes to convey various foliage and rubble – as well as future texturing the water and pillars. Overall, I’m pleased with the progress I made during this week, though I could’ve benefited from spending less time on research and more time on the end product.
